Yes, it's the most wonderful time of the year . . . already. My lamentations of the earlier and earlier start to the holiday shopping season was somewhat mollified by seeing that the annual Hess truck will be arriving at my local station next week. It actually warmed my little grinch heart a bit. There's so much to like about this tradition. It's unabashedly American in so many ways. A marketing scheme devised by Leon Hess in 1964 that became a yearly phenomenon and of course the saviour of part-time dads needing a last-minute present. But oh, what a present. Nearly every year or couple of years a new truck but with different features. The first one pumped water or perhaps even gasoline if you really wanted to be authentic. Since then they have featured motorcycles, race cars, helicopters, and this year a supersonic jet. Some years it wasn't even a truck at all. In 1980 it was a Winnebago-like "Training Van." In '93 is was a police care and, my personal favorite in '07, a monster truck with two motorcycles. And of course what do all of these have . . . working headlights. I'll be asking Santa for one.
